Coming Fall 2017
The Ride for Sight
The Ride for Sight is a Fall tradition and the main fund raising activity for Southern Eye Institute. This will be our fourth annual event. The first Ride in 2014 occurred on a Saturday afternoon and comprised of 75 motorcycle riders traveling 150 miles through west Tennessee, including a visit to the home of Alex Haley in Henning. The second Ride was Tom Lewis riding his motorcycle 1500 miles through Arkansas, Oklahoma and north Texas. Visits along the way included Subiaco Monastery in Arkansas, my God parents in Lindsey TX near the Oklahoma border and Cistercian Abbey in Irving TX. The third Ride last year was a 4600 mile motorcycle trek by Tom, visiting 20 different Catholic churches with 20 masses in 20 days. He rode from Memphis to Denver, north through Yellow Stone and Great Falls, east through the Dakotas and back home to Memphis. He saw the homes of Jim Thorpe and Amelia Earhart, visited with dear friends in Denver and made many new friends all along the way.
This year the Ride for Sight begins this Summer as Tom and Cathy’s mission trip to Africa comes to an end. From Freetown, Sierra Leone they flew to Paris where they visited the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Metal and Saint Catherine Labouré at Rue de Bac. They also visited the Cathedral of Norte Dame where Jesus’ Crown of Thorns is encased in gold. Then on to Lisbon, Fatima, which is celebrating its 100 anniversary since Mary appeared to three children and finally to Santarem, home of a Eucharistic miracle. There are many stories to be told about the 2017 Ride For Sight, beginning October 1st and continuing until November 15th. Stayed tune for this Ride and your opportunity to donate this mission of eyesight and love.
